The P&O scandal...thanks a bundle Dubai

@Judd, But, surely the lorry drivers are passengers arent they Juddy?
And when you take your car abroad dont you travel with it ??
I a sure there are, or used to be, rules a company needs to comply with
before they could operate ??
Donkeyman! :thinking::thinking:

It just serves us right for allowing a good British, and world renowned company to fall into foreign hands.

Well it sounds like the unions may be taking up the cudgel to fight for these
seamen as it looks like the government hasn’t got the stomach for it ?
Some of the new agency staff have allready chucked it in as they weren’t told
they were replacing existing staff !!
Donkeyman! :hugs::hugs:

And now it seems the government knew all about this before the staff.

The Sunday Times newspaper said it received a leaked memo apparently written by a senior Whitehall official which tried to “justify” the mass redundancies, stating that “without these decisions, an estimated 2,200 staff would likely lose their jobs”.

The newspaper said it was “widely shared across Government” and recipients included the Prime Minister’s private office while Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is understood to have received a copy.

It comes after Mr Shapps openly criticised P&O’s handling of the sacking of the seafarers and replacing them with cheaper agency staff, stating he had written to P&O chief executive Peter Hebblethwaite questioning the legality of the move.

@Gee3 , What!! He’s written a real LETTER ??
And posted it ??
Just shows how urgent he thinks it is !!

Hard to see what a UK Union can do about this?

Foreign Ship, Foreign Ownership, etc., the ships come and go just like any other visiting vessel.

Maybe the Union could refuse to dock it? (in the UK)

That’s if it’s the same Union.

Or, maybe, hit the P&O vessels which have not been among the ones chosen to be re-staffed?

Hopefully, there might be some way of kicking back!

I noticed that P&O Ferries say it has resumed its services between Dublin and Liverpool. This was as of Saturday afternoon; so they are back and sailing again.

I think I might just mosy over to their Liverpool Booking Office and spray paint the window…

Dockers refused to unload Russian fuel recently. This could potentially turn nasty. Regardless of where the company, ship etc is registered, it wants UK business & it wants to use UK harbours.

For one, I don’t take my car abroad (or any vehicle if it comes to that). The drivers of said vehicles are only temporary passengers travelling short distances across the channel/Irish Sea, not gallivanting round the Caribbean on luxury cruise liners.

Pure unsubstantiated hearsay from an anti-government rag. A “leaked memo apparently written by a senior Whitehall official

How very convenient, and plays into the hands of those fuelling anti-government propaganda.

In today’s Mail on Sunday, there’s an article by the local union official in Hull saying the agency workers on board the ferries are being paid about £2.50/hr. I hope this isn’t true because, otherwise, it will cause even more massive problems for P&O and its owners.

First, The Times are owned by News Corp, (Rupert Murdoch,) who also own Fox News & they are anything but anti government.

Secondly. A DfT spokesperson has admitted the memo existed. :

“This was an internal Government memo which, as standard practice, outlined what officials had been told by P&O Ferries shortly before their announcement was made.

So the DfT are trying to minimise the memo, but have admitted it existence.

@Judd , What’s wrong with being anti-government Juddy ??
I think they should be shown up at every opportunity !!
Also l see no difference in operating a ferry to any other form of transport
if it Plies for hire ??

He was also on the coach which stopped to pick up a security detail of a dozen guards - who were dressed in black, equipped with handcuffs.

“I’ve got kids and I started thinking about them - in this day and age you’ve got to have morals and principles. My kids are proud of me and that’s the main thing.”

  • what on earth? How can they treat people like this?

@PixieKnuckles , Exactly that Pixie!
Seems us common muck are the only ones left that still practice ethics ?
Perhaps the arabs should stick to slave trading ??

Hi

All roads lead to Dubai, and to one Company in Dubai which is owned by the ruler of Dubai.

They are known for ruthless business practices.

In addition to P&O Ferries they own Emirates Airline, a number of Ports and move 10% of the worlds freight.

They are also the Company Richie Sunak has mentioned in his drive for Freeports.

UK Labour Legislation will not apply in these Freeports.

As regards P&O Ferries, things are not as bad as DPWorld make out.

Last year P&O Ferries paid out £220 million in dividends.

@swimfeeders , Youv’e got that right Swimmy !! That’s what l meant
by saying they should stick to what they know,( slave trading) !
As you say, P&O ferries have no real financial problems at all, except for
the exceptional greed of its shareholders !!
If Rishi is mixed up with them then he has no place in our government !

I’ve never been a ‘union man’, but this behaviour by the Arabs is definitely not ‘playing the white man’.
I wouldn’t use P&O or Emirates.
