The Modern World

I have some doubts that the internet will disappear again. If so, what will it be replaced by? What is actually meant by the internet disappearing again? Since the internet is such a multi-faceted system we need to specify which of its functionalities or aspects we have in mind? Is it the access to it by all and sundry that will change? Is it the service provided by the big four? Is it the way it’s being used or is it the technical architecture and backbone internet that will vanish or be changed?

The opposite may also be true with the internet becoming so ubiquitous that you won’t even notice it any more in the sense that it is likely to become less of a service people connect to but more of an omnipresence punctuating every part of our lives.

No, it was a reference to E M Forster’s novel “the machine stops”. I am sure someone is planning such a thing. A very good book if you haven’t come across it. Such a visionary.
