Hello and welcome Patrick ![]()
Mum always cooked a traditional Sunday Roast, lamb, beef or pork with lovely roast potato’s, and a mixture of fresh vegetables dad had grown in his garden, topped with a delicious gravy, always followed by some type of dessert
Yep. Same here, and Dad would always carved it beautifully.
Christmas turkey, chestnut stuffing, cranberry jelly …
spicy bread sauce too
Egg and Chips.
The great sadness was, we could not afford good quality tomato ketchup ![]()
When I was young we had rabbit every Sunday, my old man bred them and every Sunday morning he would go down the garden to dispatch and skin one. Later he sold the skins.
This was in the day when chicken was a luxury meal only had at Christmas and very special occasions. We also occasionally had pigeon pie.
Always disliked ketchup too much sugar, tomato sauce is so much better.
These were all the rage back in the 70s

The height of sophistication! ![]()
We’d sometimes have them during the week, usually roast on Sunday! ![]()
Oh I remember them chilli, and also the Christmas chicken, a once a year delicacy
Can’t remember when I first tasted Turkey but it certainly wasn’t during my childhood
Paella was the best of them. I like the way it was described as a meal for two when it was clearly only enough for one person. Apparently it was to stop the purchaser from feeling like a loser.
One of my most abiding memories of both The Christmas chicken and turkey was stripping the carcass until it was almost bare, then finding the wishbone and deciding who to snap it with.
I’m not sure people snap wishbones anymore? ![]()
The rice was quite a vivid yellow as I remember in some of those curries! ![]()
That sounds absolutely amazing! There is honestly nothing quite like a proper Sunday roast, especially when the veggies come straight from the garden. It instantly makes you feel at home. What was your absolute favorite dessert that used to follow it?
Of course, no Sunday roast is complete without the Yorkshire puddings…
That unlocked a core memory! You hardly ever see people snap wishbones anymore, but it used to be the best part of the post-dinner clean-up. Thanks for sharing that lovely memory!
That really shows how much times have changed! It’s wild to think chicken used to be a luxury while rabbit and pigeon pie were everyday staples. Your dad was certainly resourceful with the skins, too! And I’m totally with you on the tomato sauce over sweet ketchup—much better flavor.
You honestly can’t beat a good old Egg and Chips! Simple, absolute perfection, and total comfort food."
