Thank you so much, everyone.
Susie had been struggling to breathe and had been in hospital before this time. Steroids and antibiotics, discharged, then back in where she stayed. At the weekend the Dr drew off a huge syringe full of fluid, and was getting it analysed. She was on so much oxygen she then had a build up of carbon dioxide. Dr told Rob she still had about 2L fluid still in chest cavity. They tried their best to get it to drain away but overnight Sunday she took a turn for thr worse. Rob was called just after 6am and he called me soon after, to say she didn’t have long.
I got up about 7.50 and sat with Rob for abt 1.5 hrs, talking about the practical side of things. I said I’d help where I could. She had been given morphine and some bloke tried to rouse her, with no response. He said her breathing was unsustainable, and as the fluid was preventing oxygen from reaching vital irgans, one by one they would shut down.
I had planned a short caravan break so had to leace at 9.10. He called me an hour later to say she went close to 10am. It was incredibly sad seeing her like that but knew it was my last chance, and to give moral support to Rob.
I have since exchanged emails with her estranged sister, who had been saddened at the news, and have spoken to Rob several times while I’m awsy. Unf my car decided to break down on the way, leaving me stranded here, but Green Flag have taken it to a garage where it can stay to be looked at. Friends will get me, the dog and belongings home, tomorrow, early.
It will mean I can’t just pop round to Rob’s as I would need to get the bus but he says letting her sister know is a weight off his mind. Hospital registers death and issues certificate so there are no pressing matters. And both of them have elected for direct cremation, so no funeral to plan.
Sometimes Susie and I would chat on the phone or meet up in town. I’m going to miss my friend.
RIP Susie.
