I have known about the extraordinary number of camels in Australia.
They all derive from the population brought over to Australia from the mid 1800s. Used as pack animals then released into the wild with the advent of the motor car and trains early 1900s.

Apparently the Australian camels are much sought after in the Middle East for racing because they are the original breed not inbred.
Inbreeding in the Middle East has produced rather unfortunate results (or so I read)
