Silly situations!

Yep, but they have been trying to change my meters for a smart meter for a couple of years, last time they came the electrician refused to do the job because one of the fuses had a friable asbestos sleeve. I removed that and told them but haven’t heard any more about it.

Years ago I got a letter from the electricity company saying they were unable to read my meter because of a spiders web (Orb Weaver), I wrote back saying that what did you expect in Australia and that they should employ more robust meter readers. Never heard any more about it.

You’re lucky. I and many others certainly don’t want a smart meter. I’m sure I’ve explained why before. On the other hand, you in Australia probably have more customer-centric power companies that we do.

@Bruce , Sounds like your house has 3 Phase power supply Brucy??
Very few UK homes have 3 Phase !!
I think the 3Phase is split up at the local sub-stations for distribution ?

Oh Tabby, that read like a scene from Fawlty Towers or a Brian Rix farce.

You weren’t in the bungalow opposite my house were you, because the new neighbours told us they had to pull out a kitchen drawer then lie down to read the meter through a hole in the cupboard backing?

I wish I did have three phases Assman but I only have two phases. I could get three phases but the cost makes it pointless.

In older houses like mine the stove was wired half to each phase. Even modern stoves have the ability for the heating elements to be wired to different phases but they rarely are in modern houses.

@Bruce , Yeah, when l lived on the farm in SA we had 3 Phase supply,
And the previous owner had left a huge 3 Phase cooker behind that we
used for a short time , but l got fed up holding the overload contactors
in when busy with guests breakfasts !!

Interestingly, I have read recently on ‘another DIY forum’ that some people have mentioned having an old 3-phase supply to their house, of which only one phase is in use. I suppose that would be easy to convert to 3-phase, though the meter would probably need changing.

Other than that, I suppose that a new cable would have to be laid from the nearest sub-station if someone requested 3-phase.

@JBR , Exactly that, but you would need 3 meters, or probably a 3in one
meter nowdays?

Yes, I suppose that if you can use each phase individually, that would be necessary.
