Seriously thinking about buying a campervan and giving up my rental home

Hi OGF.

I am in a Holiday Inn Express at the moment,

Normal Room Price £109 a night,

Typical Yorkshire Discount to £65 a night including Breakfast and 25% off food and drink.

Not really, the discount is real, but arranged by the Police when they brought me here,

Hotel is lovely, so are the Staff, and they really look after people like me,.

The rooms ae huge, so are the portions of food.

A really nice way to travel around.

Hello Swim, good to hear that you are being well looked after. Will your insurance pay for your stay away from home?
I suppose if someone was going to permanently live there it would be too upmarket and expensive. I’ve stayed in lots of Premier Inns, once when Mrs Fox and me fell out and I went to Hull and did four or five days in one. It was a fantastic room high up and overlooking the river, It was when the snooker world championships were on at the Crucible in Sheffield and I spent my time watching the snooker on TV and going out for long walks…Come to think of it, why did I ever come home… :017:

Hi OGF

It is already kicking off.

I will post on my I am now famous thread, but carefully.

Might be wrong, but I read last week that new licence legislation will mean those over 70 will need retesting to drive one.

You could be lucky, couple up the lane were in a hotel for 18 months after a fire. Good news is their house is now fantastic since it has been done up. My house insurance covers 150K for alternative accommodation.

Depends on the GVW, although us oldies who passed our tests before Jan 1st 1997 which gives us class B entitlement which means we at present can drive a vehicle up to 8250 KGS, after 70 years old, this classification will be removed but, a standard licence allows for driving up to up to 3500 KGS which is what our Motorhome is plated for, so, for us it will make no difference.

That brought back memories. My poor old Father-in-Law had one of those and I had this. Now the sands of time have moved the goal posts.

Gosh that is pricey. I complained when the average cost of a powered site here went over $30 (£15), now they tend to sit between $30 and $40 but some are still below $30.

However you can pay a small fortune for a site on the coast in a popular resort but there are also plenty of free sites too - most rest areas allow 24 to 48 hour stays (but who checks?) - they might not have showers.

This is one I stopped at just to make tea and stretch my legs but you can see a caravan parked obviously overnight. The facilities were good miles from anywhere - about half way between Mt Isa and Cloncurry

Bruce, you will probably forgotten that the topography of Blighty is different than that of Australia, not horses for courses.

Yes but you have the advantage of economies of scale but it wasn’t meant to be a comparison other than one of price alone.

I follow this bloke on YouTube:

Could you buy some land and build a house from natural (more cost-effective) materials?

Wales has a brilliant One Planet scheme that allows people to build eco-friendly homes in rural areas…

Maybe you have something similar there?

For that to happen I would need at least 3/4 of a million dollars. Australia is stoopid expensive.
I have nowhere near that and have to make what I do have last until my final day.

I have booked a flight to Melbourne, mid-April.
$350 arriving at 1.30pm

I had a look at the terms and conditions of my airline ticket and flight obligations; it runs to over 17,000 words.

Good video Bruce, didn’t know about that place, good location to park then zoom to the Malvern Hills on the leccy bike

It’s not that new Davey, when I received my new driving licence at 73 in 2023 I noticed several groups had been removed from my licence…7.5 tonne truck and Mini bus entitlement.
I complained to the DVLA and they said that I could have them reinstated by forwarding a medical certificate and eye test certificate, both rather expensive to pursue, so I left it at that. I used to drive trucks as a courier and while working for the Royal Mail, but I reasoned that those days were over. I do miss not being able to drive a mini bus because I could still lead and support walking parties across the wild bits of the UK.

Oh dear OGF. life becomes a real bum when we get old, they all hate us, we are the reason for all their problems, road accidents and the cost of living. Which begs the question how my day car has four dents in it, as I sure as hell never did them and sure as hell, I have never put any into anybody else’s. 70 what a crime, ever tried to hire a small van here, or a car say in the Greek Islands? I am a country lover like you, living on the rolling hills of the South Downs and I walked them daily once, rather than take a horse which are about my only neighbours. Sold my little toy and regret it, heck I am only 87 coming up and still need an adrenaline rush on the cheap and baggy trousers and brouges are not my thing. But every day, the woke brigade wants me off the road which is putting me off buying another toy like this cheap one, but the thought is there.

Forgot to ask OGF. I noticed you posted that you were fitted with a Cardioverter-Defibrillator Pacemaker. Can you still drive with it?

I’ve read something similar … but a long let on a cabin on a cruise ship so you get to go around the world.
