Reduce number of SUVs?

,

Actually that’s what I meant, we copied the EU rules

Our daughter has a Citroen Berlingo and is quite happy with it. We have a Peugeot Partner, which is much the same in design. Both have a point difficult to get used to but it’s good once you do. This brakes only need a very light touch to slow the car/van down quickly. If anyone else drives and uses the same brake pressure as other vehicles, it can make the car brake violently.

seems to me that Bruce is not so much about speeding than women drivers. It has been pointed out by others about what speed she was doing and the exceptions. Laws my be different in Australia about speeding . He can’t tell me he always keeps withing any speed limits in Australia or has a bull/roo bar on the front of his vehicle whch is banned here in the UK.
I do find if a little offensive and hypocritical about my wife whom he has never met.
This is the attitude one gets when drinking too much Kangaroo juice.

To be fair speeders are not necessarily worse drivers than slowpokes. At a low speed the chance of people having a loss of attention, day dreaming or maybe looking at their phones must be much higher because they don’t worry so much about an accident and tune the radio or peel a banana.

The accidents I have had I’ve either been completely stationary or moving maybe 2-5mph. In both cases the other driver said he “didn’t see me”. One came right at me over a mini roundabout and said he didn’t see me accusingly as though it was my fault I appeared and had a right of way (I’ve recently managed to successfully claim on his insurance). I’ve also had damage when I’m not even in the car and someone has misjudged their parking space. I wonder how many insurance claims are similar vs serious accidents. It’s probably 90:10 or maybe even higher.

The biggest problem with these chelsea tractors is similar to my problem with the van that shunted me from behind when filtering onto an A road because he was too high up and didn’t look down at my car.

IMO the 20mph speed limits are ridiculous and they should make it 25mph so that people then go at 30mph which served us perfectly well for 70 years (or whenever it started)

I once witnessed a raid when they were transferring cash at Tesco it wasn’t car ramming but a sawn off shotgun pointed at the securicor man. Little did these gangs realise that the banknotes would spoil with bright orange paint the minute they opened the box. You’d think the ATM might have the same safeguards.

The idea of the 20mph limits in urban areas are because the injuries caused by a 20mph impact are mostly survivable, whereas higher speeds are more likely to cause more severe injury or even fatalities, if the speed is increased to 25mph then we would be back to the 30 limit thus negating the reasoning behind implementing the 20 limits…as people wouldn’t stick to 25mph as is the norm now

Most people completely ignore the 20mph limit and drive at 30mph or even faster. If you do drive at 20mph people just overtake

Confucius he say, :“If you speed and no one see you, did it actually happen?”

You’re quite correct about the roo bar but I don’t expect you get many roos on the road in the UK but it is also handy for sweeping errant pedestrians, cyclists and schoolchildren out of the way without scratching the bonnet.

It wasn’t me that published her sins on Youtube for the world to see, you only need to look in the mirror to see who is at fault here.

I know Annie, very frustrating, and they rag their cars over the speed bumps and probably wonder why they keep having to replace suspension components regularly…

Eh? That’s a strange defence. The 10% over rule is also at the discretion of the police.

In any case, if she had kept below 30mph throughout the trip, the accident may well never have happened as she wouldn’t have been at that junction at that time.

But, that’s life. The main point is that nobody got hurt.

Good post Annie, most high speed crashes are caused after the driver loses control or make a bad judgement, but most low speed crashes are due to lack of concentration and fiddling about with the many accessories now appearing on the dashboard and thinking that they could safely avoid any hazards that might suddenly appear in front of them. The only accident I had after ten years of driving for a living and being out on the roads for up to 16 hours a day, was rolling into the back of a Ford Focus at less than 5 mph while fiddling with the radio and listening to Jeremy Vine.

There’s no need. I’ve been to WA. They only have two roads, and only one of those is paved.

It’s a jungle out there. A concrete jungle.

Here the roads are large so SUV’s are not the problem and SUV’ drivers we dive as safe as cars but the problem here are drivers who text .

I do not know if same problem by everyone else .

Foxy, if I was listening to Jeremy vine, I’d want to run into the back of something too…

So … road rage can be a nasty affair can it if two roos bars hit head on. Or not.

Good preventative action by Sue there! I had a similar accident once, was on the main road and saw a motorcycle pull up to the T like that car did, however unlike Sue, I thought the rider would stop but he didn’t (he didn’t even look to see if any cars were coming!) so I had to break (and skid!) and even tho my car only touched him, he went flying!!

Good on Sue for stopping completely! She must have a sixth sense.

Bruce, please stop winding up RS. Please focus on the rest of the thread moving forward.

It seems there is a sub-culture of owners of these car-vans. The three French companies shared the chassis and I think the drive chain on their Berlingo / Partner / Kangoo cars. Our old Kangoo is an excellent workhorse. And it has proven fairly cheap to run, both regular usage costs and bigger maintenance - we got the two front drive shafts replaced for less than 500 euros. Try that on a four wheel drive (although most SUVs are simple front wheel drive).
My guess is that on purchase cost, running cost, insurance costs, servicing and maintenance costs it is significantly better than any SUV. As its a vehicle designed for the French rural market it is also adept at cross country. I’ve been across fields and down rough country tracks in it. No problem. This is more off road than many SUVs ever get.
The load carrying is excellent. I can get 4 push bikes in the back, not just fridges and ovens. Once a desk. Its the high roof in the passenger cabin that is most useful.
Our Kangoo does however carry something else - a permanent doggy whiff.

Having the third row of seats in my Nissan xtrail making it a 7 seated means if going out with friends only need the one car. With the third row of seats down and the second row folded down flat a well makes a huge cargo area. Something that can’t be done with a car.

It’d be lite rutting reindeers.

Anyway, this SUV discussion is starting to become like pro and anti gun lobbies arguing over the second amendment.
