How Pleasant To Know Mr. Lear - Poem by Edward Lear

How pleasant to know Mr. Lear,
Who has written such volumes of stuff.
Some think him ill-tempered and queer,
But a few find him pleasant enough.

His mind is concrete and fastidious,
His nose is remarkably big;
His visage is more or less hideous,
His beard it resembles a wig.

He has ears, and two eyes, and ten fingers,
(Leastways if you reckon two thumbs);
He used to be one of the singers,
But now he is one of the dumbs.

He sits in a beautiful parlour,
With hundreds of books on the wall;
He drinks a great deal of marsala,
But never gets tipsy at all.

He has many friends, laymen and clerical,
Old Foss is the name of his cat;
His body is perfectly spherical,
He weareth a runcible hat.

When he walks in waterproof white,
The children run after him so!
Calling out, ā€œHe’s gone out in his night-
Gown, that crazy old Englishman, oh!ā€

He weeps by the side of the ocean,
He weeps on the top of the hill;
He purchases pancakes and lotion,
And chocolate shrimps from the mill.

He reads, but he does not speak, Spanish,
He cannot abide ginger beer;
Ere the days of his pilgrimage vanish,
How pleasant to know Mr. Lear!

Edward Lear

Thank you Gumbud! I love Edward Lear. A few purists mock him for writing doggerel but, if children like it and it a starts a interest in poetry, then that has to be good - doesn’t it?

Apart from anything else - his work is imaginative and great fun !!

I hate poetry. This is the only poem I like.

I’ve got two legs
from my hips to the ground
and when I move them
they walk around
and when I lift them
they climb the stairs
and when I shave them
they ain’t got hairs.

I thought I’d had the best days now

But I changed my mind and here is how

Each day brings more love and hope

too much to moan and whinge and mope

The sun comes forth new every day

We can be certain that it always be that way

Just as the moon comes out each night

Changing the darkness to brilliant light

Every blade of grass and vivid flower

Every tree that grows tall and towers

Things beneath the wind and waves

Knows the plan the creator gave

All in all I am happy now I know

Forward is the only way to go

just saying…no one else has done it… I think?

Memories that never fade

I thought I heard you whisper me one day
How is my former lover by the way?
Do you still recall that captured smile?
That spoke a thousand meanings for a while

Do you remember when we didn’t have a care?
Would walk through rain and laughter share?
Would find those moments in between
Where wasted times just grey and mean?

How are you now my greying, long lost friend?
I often think of you when eve descends
You were my life, my all back then
How did we part, how did it end?

It’s hard sometimes to think you’re still around
Across some ocean but can’t be found
But I still have the book of memories close
They still remind me of your loving ghost

Epic, moving, soulful, inspiring.I could go on…

CLAUDE, THE CRAB.

Claude, the crab, was upset,
in fact he felt quite slighted,
for his friends were all at a party
to which Claude was not invited!
He sat and drowned his sorrows
with a single malt (or ten!)
then set out to ask his friends
why they had not invited him.
At first they made excuses
but, at last, they gave the answer -
ā€œIt was nothing personal, Claude,
just that we didn’t want Cancer!ā€.

Think about it !!!

I see in my crystal ball a sign, from the stars

Very clever, but also kinda sad.
You know I am a fan ST.

Claude the Crab, a very imaginative poem, but also sad, poor creature to be likened to a star sign. ( I wonder why they named that horrid disease after it?)

Loves Won and Lost

I chanced upon her on a greying autumn day
She smiled just briefly, then pressed on; was I just in the way?
I thought there was a flicker there, a glance that stayed just longer
And as our paths crossed more that year that flickering glance grew stronger

I’m not sure when we crossed that line that said this is forbidden
But by then the die had been cast down our passions wildly driven
We grasped at every moment like it was the last on earth
We laughed and cried and held onto that love for all its worth

I guess we knew that we were heading for a cliff top like decision
That would test us to the very core, cloud even loves clear vision
We skirted round that fatal day, Still talked about tomorrows
Said we would work it out somehow despite surrounding sorrows

We went our separate ways again promising not for ever
We phoned, we wrote and tried to meet but the demons were too clever
With broken hearts and heavy steps we trudged our separate paths
As as the time grew longer, our souls were all but trashed

I guess it finished on a ā€˜high’ of love and pain and longing
You get on with your life and find some more belonging
We wrote much later in the years and reminisced like lovers
We thought the painting would not dry but the laquer tears had covered

As I look back on all my paths ours was the brightest moment
Just for a while time did stand still and give us joys enthronement
I think I met an angel then sent down to test and steal me
And whisper ā€œlove that can’t be shared is counterfeit believe meā€
