Pictures or videos or both?

Well, if that’s what you want.
Sometimes you want the instant, not your video…

very true, but there also may well be in a video an instance captured in a frame that can be extracted and made into a photo.
That photo you posted is excellent and well captured, but if taken with a video the whole movement could be broken down into individual photos of say start of the cats jump through to the end.
Taken on a video and made into slow motion would be absolutely fantastic
This is why I am getting more and more into doing videos

I thinks it’s possible to ‘see’ or appreciate something without feeling the need to take a photograph or make a video.

Looking at old photos and videos of our family growing up only sends me into a fit of nostalgia. Life lived that can’t be done again. I’ll leave them for the next generation to find and look at.

WE hang old painting in galleries so we can see what they looked like and dressed. Same with photos for descendants to do the same as with videos if they can still play them

And there it is. Photos will never require technology to work, and therefore will last a lot longer than video, in my opinion.

did you see my thread “do it and it works”

to me that is more interesting than just a stills shot even if it is a first effort zooming and panning at the same time

very true but now vinal records are on the way back and interest in them is growing. So maybe in the future the same will happen to videos. it already has with old 1920’s silent movies. Even a dedicated TV channel now for them

I agree.
I also can buy a nice frame and put the completed photo somewhere i can see it as I walk past everyday.
That is how I prefer to keep my memories.

RS, if you don’t mind me saying, I think your ideas and equipment belong on a more specialist photographic site. Although we have a several dedicated photographers here, the majority of the forum are quite happy with their ‘point and shoot’ photos, and some jolly good ones we see, too.

Maybe it would be better to try and understand not everyone takes it so seriously as you, whereas a specialist forum would know what you’re talking more, and offer their own ideas too.
I doubt you will convert many of us old crocks now, at our age!

That is sort of true. I’m not sure how many people print photos but I think most these days are stored and looked at on a screen rather than printed.

If printing, an inkjet printer would likely be used. Prints done with an inkjet printer can be prone to fading if put in a frame for display, although they might last if kept in the dark (an album for instance).

Dye-sub printer prints don’t fade but not many people use those. I’m not sure what process the self-print machines in shops use but if inkjet, then prints might still have a limited life.

We have some photos that were taken years ago on 35mm film and developed by a shop. Some of these have yellowed and faded, even the ones kept in an album. The shop can’t have fixed them properly I suppose.

Anyway, photo prints may not always last longer than electronic storage.

If you are making a documentary about your holiday, video would be the perfect medium realspeed, but a few photos are all that’s required to bring back the memories. I doubt my daughter will go through my photos of places she doesn’t recognise with people she doesn’t know more than once. I suspect the majority of my photos and videos will be consigned to the waste bin after my demise…:frowning:

“…and there’s Dad on his 34th Trig…”

No she won’t. She’ll keep every last one!

I agree Mart. I spent so much time videoing in Egypt that I sort of missed the real moment in time.

Might as well stop at home and watch a travel program on the telly…And conjunctivitis is no fun at all while you’re on holiday…:107:

That’s a good point. There are so many videos out there of virtually anything you can think of, that it’s not worth doing in a big way.

My first video camera was a triple turret Standard 8 Bell and Howell. No zoom in those days when zoom first came out it was 3X or 5X and a zoom lens camera was outrageously expensive.

I agree with OGF my photos and videos will die with me and while they are interesting they are nothing compared to the memories.

I often video as well as take a photo, my problem was storage. I can keep them in a big file but couldn’t share them on here or elsewhere because they wouldn’t upload to the site. I didn’t want to put them on You Tube as I didn’t want the world and his wife wading through all my stuff. My Grandaughter was up here on a visit last summer and she got stuck into You Tube for me and made me an account and it’s all private but I can share one if I want…So I sometimes do.

Roxy

Storage can be a problem but I use an extrnl hard drive to keep mine on as well as a couple of extra internal drives and keep the “c” drive relatively free.
As for what I video there is no way would I take any of children I would rather not use the camcorder and often not purely because.
Of course youtube videos can be made private if that is ones want , I don’t even put up a fraction of mine as they would not be of any interest to anyone else

I don’t do videos, just not really interested.

But I’m addicted to youtube channels done by pros talking about still photography. It’s awesome to see things like someone walking down the street on GoPro, a click, and the result caught on a stills camera.

There are so many variables in making/taking a good shot: positioning yourself to catch the best light, focal length, depth of field, field of view, shutter speed, etc. And I don’t know how to incorporate these into video recording.

And no, you can’t grab a frame from a video and make a realistic comparison with a proper shot.

A perfect still photograph can be likened to a work of art, and is up there with paintings done by the masters…In my opinion…
