Open Heart Surgery

Has anyone here had open heart surgery?

Why did you have to have it?

Did you go into,Atrial Fibrillation after your operation?

We’re you on oxygen after surgery?

My elderly mum had heart surgery about 12 years ago. She developed AF about five years later after a hip operation. So the docs think it was connected to the op but not the heart op. I didn’t realise post operative AF is a thing but looking at research just now it seems it can be triggered by the trauma. Particularly in elderly people undergoing major ops.

Hi

Yes, emergency quadruple bypass 20 years ago this December.

I was given a 1 in 3 chance of living.

No problems at all until a year ago.

Crikey SF, that must have been scary,:open_mouth::open_mouth::open_mouth:

I suffer with palpitations still, even after open heart surgery, I’ve just read that drinking water helps, it’s not good to be dehydrated if you suffer with palpitations or atrial fibrillation.

Next time I get them, it tells you to drink water, so I will do that next time it happens.

Hi

Pauline, there are so many issues which cannot be sorted by open heart, pacemakers etc.

Take the time to have your condition exactly explained to you.

Mine is inoperable, they cannot get into my heart anymore and a pacemaker will not work for my condition.

I cannot have an MRI Scan because of the amount of metal in me and a CT Scan is not accurate enough for the newest treatments.

Drinking fluids is good for low blood pressure, which is as dangerous as high blood pressure.

Yes, I need these palpitations explained to me properly, last time I had them I posted about them on here…I think they did explain, but I forgot, because they talk so quickly and so much to take in, I will write it down next time I go, last time I spoke with my specialist, she didn’t want to see me for a couple of years, unless I’m worried about something, well, if I get these palpitations again, I will be making an appt to see her, I do know that if I felt faint with them or dizzy I was to dial 999…

My repaired valve doesn’t need explaining I know what that means and it was a success…couldn’t go through that operation again.
