Old age doesn't come itself

I still feel young which I know is daft because I’m not but I keep busy which is just as well with the project I’ve taken on…roofers should finish up today…yay!!

I still feel young …it’s just those lying mirrors telling me otherwise .

Hi

Yes, my lounge mirror had an old man living in it.

I think of our bodies as a machine & most people try to keep it in good working order.
However even the best machines have a few faults, after years of service, so perhaps we should have learned in our earlier life what many pensioners told us.
I am sure that many of us now listen to what medical research has discovered & much of it has extended our life expectancy but, one day, we will all have to go so the new members on earth can do further work to overcome all the problems of old age for their generation.
We just need to remember that there are still joys in life, as we get old , like the joy we receive from children, pets & especially old friends who remind us how much fun we had in our early years. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh I hate growing up older. One particular thing I have noticed is that muscle aches and pains take longer to heal up and go away! And back pain, what on earth is that all about? Move a certain way or lift something and suddenly “oof” a jolt of pain makes me stop suddenly and I have to sit down. I didn’t have that before and it makes me sad.

Hi

I have decided that Twink made a valid point on another thread that I would be better thinking of the hospital as my second home.

Just pop in for a holiday on a regular basis.

Life expectancy has increased dramatically over time. Maybe our bodies were never “designed” (whatever that means) to last this long anyway, but somehow we’ve found a way to counter nature.

Hi

Being in a sideroom next to the nurse and doctor station is an education on aging.

You hear all sorts of things.

From the effects of sorbitol, a sweetener to what is the acceptable amount of brain shrinkage with age.

The specialist Consultants advise the court on the capability of the person.

Amazing what goes on.

You should write a book, Swimmy…all these conversations need to be heard :+1:

Hi

In general terms yes, they are fascinating.

No identification of those involved however.

What is has done is make me even more determined to get things sorted and avoid lawyers and social services getting involved.

As an aside, if you want to avoid incontinence, especially if you are a lady, who apparently are more at risk, avoid coffee and sorbitol sweetener.

Well thank you for that advice! I never touch sweetener in any form if I can help it, and only have half a spoonful of sugar in my coffee (working on getting that down further).

Yes, I suppose being in hospital does give you a certain level of understanding and better knowledge of what not to do in terms of getting things in order.

I do hope you get home soon though. :hugs:

remember all those instruction booklets some of us discard or misplace after buying say a new kitchen gadget cos we think we know how to operate it anyway?

we should get a handle full for the human body for each household and stick one to the fridge door?

would we follow it ? nah hahaha!!

I find it hard to pin down when I first thought about this. All I know is that when I look back to when I retired, 12 years ago, I can scarcely believe how different I feel now. I used to run up stairs, dash all over campus to meetings, work my socks off in general, and then come home to cook a meal, do housework, or on one day a week go and do a big weekly shop at Tesco. Now, if I do a big weekly shop at Tesco, I have to have a sit down for at least half an hour with a cuppa to recover. No, I lie - make that an hour :joy:

I’ve been suffering with bowel problems for a long time, had surgery 5 years ago, but the effects didn’t seem to last long, so now I’m suffering again. It exhausts me, and I regularly have to spend an afternoon in bed, after having spent a wretched night, wakeful and restless for hours. We used to go out and walk for miles on Dartmoor, and now I could no more do that than fly to the moon.

So, yeah, at some point in the last 12 years I think old age started creeping up on me…

I still feel like I’m sixteen but I often feel like I can’t move too!

Sorry to hear that @Bathsheba - not sure what bowel problems you’ve got, but you might be interested in the GAPS book:

It’s getting on a bit now but I still think it’s a fantastic introduction to the Microbiome/gut health
