New Third political party in the US: Forward Party

Historically, the US has had two political parties. Any attempt at a third party has been a failure. This might too, but some people are making another attempt.

In the past, there was no support for more than 2 political parties. That seems to be changing, but there will have to be a lot of work done at the State and local levels to have more party registration for it to affect anything on the national level.

I’ll be watching their progress with interest! Its a great idea and perhaps now is the time for something like this to actually flourish!

One word stands out, that spoils an otherwise optimistic attempt to encourage the voters, former. Any new blood, with ideas that will appeal to those voters whose apathy has led them not to vote, or enticed towards extreme politics; must have something new to say that will get them noticed. Realistically, that is a tall order.

It has bee tried here in the federal parliament. There were the Democrats (“Keep the Bastards Honest”) but they were wiped out after they sided with the Howard government to introduce the GST. Currently it is the Greens who have a couple of seats in the lower house and almost the balance of power in the upper house - the Labor government needs the support of the Greens plus one other to pass bills.

However this has been clouded by the rise of the independents in the lower house and a few minor parties.

Whether a third party will ever work in a first past the post voting system is a moot point

One prediction market has the odds at 10% that the Forward Party will win one electoral seat in 2024.
