New Premier Appointed

Due to the excitement generated by the resignation of Gladys Berejiklian you will be pleased to know that Dominic Perrottet will be sworn in as the new Premier this afternoon after he won a vote to become NSW Liberal leader.

A new cabinet will be put together by Mr Perrottet after the high-profile resignations of Deputy Premier and Nationals leader John Barilaro and Transport Minister Andrew Constance over the last two days. The Nationals provide the Deputy Premier as part of the coalition agreement so nothing can be done until they elect a new leader tomorrow.

Perrottet is a right wing conservative whereas the NSW Liberal party has always been led by a member of the moderate faction so they must have told him he will have to pull his head in for their support. He has previously voted against decriminalising abortion and euthanasia. It is believed he was in favour of letting Covid rip so it will be interesting to see if he changes the roadmap out of lockdown

When does he take delivery of the new big boys toys as in nuke subs.:smiley:

He doesn’t, Defence is a Federal issue and Scotty from Marketing’s baby. He has the more important job of Premier of NSW.

My apologies I was unaware that Australian states had Premiers are they like mayors or more important?

They are the state’s “Prime Minister”. The Australian Constitution was written to protect state rights it is why the borders are closed between states because the state Premiers can do it. Each state and territory has its own Parliament ,passes its own bills etc. The Federal Parliament has very limited powers defined in the Constitution.

The Territories (NT and ACT) have Chief Ministers but because they are territories the Federal Government can override any legislation they put up, something they can’t do for state legislation. (see the movie “Last Cab to Darwin”)

Interesting, thank you.
