I never really got Psycho, the shower scene is certainly brutal even though it’s about what you don’t see to an extent.
When I was a postie in a large London sorting office some of us would indulge ourselves in Norman Bates impressions as we worked , obviously not a very inspiring job.
I had a naked experience once when I was delivering the post Chilli…
A very attractive young woman opened the door…
She was really surprised to see a postman in the nude…
Do you think that we are getting desensitised to scary stuff and gratuitous violence now Helen?
That’s perhaps why we find the old movies a bit humorous now, and the kids go around with knives. No respect for human life or suffering anymore.
In some respects yes, but then again some of those old westerns were very violent and toy cap guns were a favourite toy for many kids, also home made bows and arrows.
That’s true Helen. I once bought a replica gun while on holiday in Spain…Just to be on the safe side, I concealed it Mrs Fox’s luggage…I didn’t want to do a stretch inside if they found it…
Fortunately, nobody noticed except Mrs Fox when we got home…She wasn’t best pleased.
Seriously though…
I was born just after the war (1950) so collecting soldiers and tanks and beating the Germans (again) was the accepted kids game in those days. But I think that’s a far cry from the movies and video games available now.
Old westerns and cop programmes didn’t actually show any gorey stuff or deal with sexual issues like they do now.
I remember watching the John Wayne westerns as a boy, and people got shot six times but there was never any bullet holes or blood…
Even in the spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood, no bullet holes or blood?
The first time I saw a head blown off in graphic detail was in a movie called ‘The Wild Bunch’ with William Holden…A bit of a shock at the time…
A really quite dark story, Dustin Hoffman and Susan George being a very unlikely couple. You’d think twice about holidaying in Cornwall after watching this😉
I’ve got to give a shout for the late Peter Vaughan who was in the film, he had the ability to exude menace, even in his comedy roles.
@Chilliboot yes a strange career departure for Dustin Hoffman. Without googling, I’m going to estimate that it was soon after The Graduate or Papillon.
