I can imagine that working actually … as rather seem to be ‘us versus them’ as in teachers versus kids, it makes one of the kids appear to be ruining it for the rest.
A bit sneaky but effective.

so different from when I went to school. What you got was the cane 3 times across both hands face up. the headmaster was a sadist but back then they could get away with any phyisical painful punishment they chose. Even one of the teachers openly displayed an IRA (Irish Republican Army) lapel badge he supported.
I don’t think kids of today would be able to deal with this
In the gym if you didn’t climb the ropes 20ft high or more you were punished with the cane on the backside. My age at that time around 11/12 years old. My parents pulled me out of there as soon as they found out
No wonder I hated school and left ASAP at the age of 15
