Very wise!
Mrs Dex has got to go to the shops one last time today for something. I think its actually an obsession as she goes shopping once, or more, times each and every day.
The stress of Christmas Day is compounded by the fact that supermarkets are closed. Although, in the past, she has managed to find some local Asian shops to nip to after Christmas dinner!!
I have just been to the village Post Office - which is in a Spar shop. The shop bit was empty, and only one person ahead of me at the PO counter. The local butcher, which is next door to the Spar, had a queue of about 60 people - mostly collecting pre-ordered food so moving fairly quickly.
But …
I could not believe the volume of traffic heading for the Shopping Park just a mile up the road. There are three supermarkets up there - Sainsbury’s, Aldi. and Asda - plus a M & S Food Hall near by. Tempers seemed frayed at the mini roundabout, which I passed on my way home, and the queues were huge. Made me very glad that I did not need to be up there for anything!
I’m just back from picking up a few things, and stuck to local shops which were empty as well. Yet the roads heading down to the retail park were very busy and a lot of beeping going on. The shops are back open after Boxing Day, so I’m not sure why everyone gets so stressed…!
I agree, Pixie.
We’ve avoided the big supermarkets like the plague for the last week. Seeing a shop that’s rammed with people would have me running for the hills. I honestly don’t know how people can do it - you just have no way of knowing whether you’re stepping into Covid soup.
We bought most of the non-perishable stuff some weeks ago, but needed fruit, veg and cheese this week, so we’ve been to local, independent shops, and farm shops. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the cheese we wanted, so I went out very late last night, about 9.30, to Lidl, and the shop was virtually empty - I got what I wanted very quickly and got home just before 10.00.
The traffic to the crematatorium was very quiet a couple of days ago, so we took the opportunity to nip into a nearby Aldi. Was pretty quiet, and the freezers were very well stocked with turkeys.
Just had to pop round to a local shop for diet lemonade. Had to buy a large bottle, for 79p, so at that price what gets wasted won’t matter.
My snowballs are safe, lol.
Tonic water has jumped from 19p to 40p a bottle!!
Eeeeek!!!
Petrol up, gas bill up, eleccy bill up, food bills up, hospital waiting times up, etc etc etc. We can cope with those.
But once the freeness of flow of G&T comes into question, I’m afraid it’s time to sharpen the pitchforks and head towards Westminster Bridge!!
Tesco and Aldi do diet lemonade for 17p a big bottle and it’s fine. We use it all the time.
