I have returned from two weeks touring the southwest of our state. From Pemberton to Dryandra woodlands.
What stood out the most was the amount of tailgating and speeding.
On the way to Dryandra, narrow roads, 100km speed limit, no passing bays on the Pinjarra – Williams road, too many drivers were tailgating me because I was doing the speed limit.
Many times I would pull off the road to take a photograph. Cars would go past, at or above the speed limit, with a tailgater within three or four car lengths.
The tailgaters show a level of arrogance which says, rules do not concern me, I will do as I like and the rest of you can get out of my way.
With all the roadworks occurring down south, will this lead to more people speeding and thus a rise in the road toll?
But were you doing the speed limit? Your speedo is wrong, it always reads low.
I have worked out the true speeds on my speedo, to do 110kph my speedo shows 119kph, for 100kph my speedo shows 106kph. I believe my sat nav rather than my speedo.
Both those speedo readings allow a buffer for a radar trap too.
Yes, I understand that, same with every car, I was doing the speed limit as read on my speedometer.
Does that mean it is okay to drive at 119kph?, or 106kph.
No, that applies to my car only, your car will be similar but not the same, you need to find exactly what the figures are for your car but if you are doing the speed limit according to your speedo then you are driving too slowly for people who want to travel at the speed limit. You are basically travelling something like about 10kph below the signposted limit (at 110kph).
You can buy digital speedos that use satellites and project the actual speed onto your windscreen
You get booked for the actual speed you are doing not what your speedo says…
The stupid thing is that design rules prevent car manufacturers using GPS technology from indicating the true speed
Any geezer caught driving in Speedos should be booked, no exceptions!
What is a speedo there? I’m thinking a brand of swimwear but pretty sure you guys are referencing the term differently.
What you call speedos are “budgie smugglers”, a speedo is the speedometer in the car.
Many a day I was a speedo driver - back in the day.
I was flashed by a speed camera doing 80.
The camera said 76.
Speed limit was 70
I completely agree with you Bretrick.
The driving around South Yorkshire is abysmal, and it’s getting worse. Whenever I’m out driving there is usually an Audi or some other German car so close that they could open my boot…
All the speed limits have been reduced around the village to 20mph (30kmh ish’) and nobody takes a blind bit of notice. Over the last few years there have been many fatalities on South Yorkshire roads and the majority of these are high power cars being driven by drivers under 21. I strongly believe that driving a car should not be allowed under the age of 21.
Lots of people will probably argue that not all drivers under the age of 21 are unsafe drivers…But with a reduction in speed limits we all must suffer because of the few that drive too fast in built up areas, and they still will.
You can see why they are called budgie smugglers then.
