I am an Atheist and always have been

I think, at an early age you get a sense of something, then as you age, to survive, it has to take a back burner, maybe Floyd did a song about this.

Ahhh, yes, but religion is the invention of man, and has been around as man has existed, that does not make it fact, it just makes it a concept, a means for man to deal/ comprehend/ explain life.

Does it matter if it’s not a fact senile?
If it helps humanity to live together in harmony and give them strength to carry on when times are bad, surely, the proof of the pudding etc?

My view is that it’s not meant to be fact, but as you say to support the human psyche to understand that the dimensions we see & experience are not the only dimensions. Our brains are wired imperfectly so we have imperfect understanding, but humans have glimmers of insight. People in the US pay therapists a fortune for the same thing.

As to the facts it depends on how much you think the dimensions we see are fact and the ones we don’t understand or see are fiction. It’s taken us thousands of years to get to this stage of our civilisation. That’s how slow and stupid humanity is.

A good post Annie and one I mostly agree with…But I wonder if the human race is supposed to be slow and stupid (only by today’s standards) are we punching above our weight ?

We only use a small portion of our brains OGF, so no I don’t think so.

Whoever told you that Annie…
Are we sure that the parts of the brain that we think we don’t use are actually silently working away on something else.
The thing about some humans is that they think the brain is an infinite gatherer and storer of information, but with so much suicide, dementia and Alzheimers around these days, isn’t that proof that it’s not…

Surely dementia and Alzheimer’s are merely the result of humans living so much longer and nothing to do with brain capacity. Suicide? I am not sure of the relevance of that

It is also evident that humans have very productive years in their 20s to, say, 50s and decline after those years

Fair enough OGF, the widely-held fraction of brain use appears to be a myth. But it’s fact that you use it or lose it. So the less you stimulate your brain and challenge it daily the less brainy you become. The things you think you know are really just a distant memory if you try to reach them now.

Bruce’s point about 20s to 50s is a good one. I am not sure whether the research has changed but in the 90s they discovered that your brain power peaks at about 27. After that wisdom and experience takes over but brain power starts slowly declining.

They say men think about sex 300 times a minute.

And there we have it, folks!

Men use up all parts of the brain they have, while women are silently using ours to full advantage! :innocent:

This lets Einstein off the hook, and you two are now “Solvers of the Questions of the Universe!”

The sense of a loved one being near you after they have passed is easily explained. It’s called “Wishful Thinking.” When we miss someone, the thought of never seeing them again is miserable & we know death is permanent, so it’s more comforting to pretend they’re still here than to acknowledge they’re gone forever.

If there were guardian angels looking out for us, nothing tragic would befall good people.

Wishful thinking on your part perhaps.

Guardian angels guide us through our path this time on earth…it doesn’t mean nothing negative will happen. It helps us to be a better person for the next time on this earth.

And, nothing you can say will change my mind. Nor will I change your mind.
End of debate with me.

It’s the good in people which makes them good, same as the evil in people which makes them evil. There are good religious people who do good, their are evil religious people that do evil, it’s up to us to decide who we want to be. I respect everybody’s right to believe whatever they choose, but in the end, that decision, good/bad, is up to us.

That’s reassuring.

I once read a quote somewhere;

If there were no religion, good people would do good things, bad people would do bad things. But to get good people to do bad things, that takes religion.

‘Religion is the most effective tool for oppression’
It can be Azz, or it can be comforting to know you are in the company of like minded people.
Like any other method for controlling the masses, they all have their pro’s and cons.
You just need to find the right one that fits you…
