How come mental health has suddenly become a big thing in the media?

Don’t think social change is responsible for much of it, that’s always gone on.

I tend to agree but who provide jobs in the first place? that is the other side of the coin.

I’m always doubtful of the claim that the young generation are in some way less robust or capable than “we were back in my day”. The 20-30’s year old today may have different values and priorities but they’re pretty much the same as all previous generations.
One thing that has changed enormously is the scope for optimism and a future to look forward to. People still want the same things as before - a decent job, with decent pay and decent prospects, housing security, the opportunity to have a family, the prospect of having a bit of spare money to indulge in stuff you like or like to do. These things people look forward to and plan for - and the confidence that such things are possible creates optimism about one’s future.
Today much of that has been removed. Its hard to get a job. Many jobs don’t pay that well (relative to costs) and are insecure - even well paid ones. The job prospects are increasingly doubtful. Housing, to buy or rent, is increasingly unaffordable. Having children appears to be unaffordable or impractical if you depend on two salaries. This means there is little to look forward to and few reasons to be optimistic.
I’m not saying that this is the only cause of mental health problems but we’ve created a society where such problems are more likely.

One of the main reasons why I have always wandered in the wild places Azz.
