Nope … I never ever say ‘Did I’ … years ago I became inclined to drive myself batty checking I had front door keys, had shut all the windows etc etc at least 6 times.
In the end I drove myself nuts. So now I do one check around before I go out and after that … it’s too late.
Once you get yourself in a froth you never remember anyway as you just confuse yourself more and fret about it.
Mine is usually did I remember my Mobile…the answer is usually no i didnt…people who know me know I’m useless at answering my mobile thats because it usually is where I’m not
I think most of us go through this panicky ‘did I’ thing. I remember coming across an idea to help prevent this panic, which was that you make a checklist, and as you go through it you say to yourself (out loud or in your head) “I am unplugging the iron”, “I am locking the back door”, “I am turning the taps off” and so on. It’s a bit like when you make a shopping list, but forget to take it with you, you usually remember all the items simply because you’ve written them down. It imprints it firmly in your mind.
Arrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! You’ve just reminded me of my ex, Artangel. She was ace at doing that especially when we were about 20miles from home on a car journey somewhere. She ALWAYS had to check every bloody electric switch in the kitchen at least 2x before she left the house, always locked and unlocked, then relocked windows, doors, etc. I even remember her starting to plug the electric kettle in then unplug it just to make sure it was actually unplugged. She was so OCD it was frightening.
I’m terrible at ‘did I’
So much that I have a list on my front door of what I need to check before I leave the house and one for what I need to take with me.Keys,phone,purse,handbag,work bag etc.
I seriously have to plan ahead even for the next day, once I left a roast in the oven while I went out,luckily my neighbours heard the timer I had set and they called me on the phone.
Memory loss and old age doesn’t help either.
.
Two seconds after double locking the front door … did I shut the kitchen window? some window or other? There really is no point in locking the door then unlocking it again, I know.
We stayed in a villa in Spain a few years back, which had 4, yes FOUR separate locks on the front door (an area known for break ins so security is crazily high!).
But can you imagine the annoyance at remembering something you forgot to do or bring with you just after locking everything? It honestly used to drive me bonkers.
It always takes me a while to leave the house then I get in the car remember what I have forgotten and go back in again . I repeat this several times :;
Did I ?.. yes I often ask myself that question. Usually it’s to do with security so I have to go back so I can sleep that night.
But Mrs M after we have left the house, will seemingly always ask “ Did I turn the hair straighteners off “ …That usually results in a U turn or a phone call to the kids.
Oh yes, it started again yesterday at my sons, he left first, then on my way home, that voice started again, did you double lock his door, are you sure you double locked his door?..
