Ah well…you have the memories though, so that’s lovely
Yes, i had penpal when i was in my teens. She was in Pennsylvania.
We wrote to each other for quite a few years.
Our lives were going quite similar. Both courting at the same time, both married almost the same time, we were both the same age and even shared the same birthday.
Cant remember why we stopped writing in the end, just gradually faded out I suppose, after marriage and children came along.
I once wrote a note to a Pigeon.
Very few have staying power in this life Mups.
Gosh, many years ago I did.
I recall there was a bloke in the forces in Nicosia and another bloke down south in the UK somewhere.
Then when t’internet came in, I found a penpal site and conversed with a bloke In Aussie for quite a few years plus his wife. We used to send gifts to each other at Xmas. They were originally from the UK and came back to visit their relatives and we all went out quite a few times before they went back to Aussie.
Slightly off topic, but related:
On my last forum a bloke started a thread about looking for a relative in Australia. His relative had a very unusual surname and was originally from the UK.
My penpal in Aussie had the same surname, so I put on the bloke’s thread if he sent me a PM, and gave me some details of the relative he was looking for, I would contact my penpal with the same name and make enquiries for him (without giving my penpals details out at that stage),
Well, the cheeky bugga who started that thread put on the thread that I was only attention seeking and basically told me to F off!.
Now what makes you think it’s work related PixieK
That’s just shocking Pesta! What a cheek!
I know Minx… I was exactly that - totally shocked - and flabbergasted.
Pixie, I have had pen pals all over the World, at one count 36. The PO loved me. Sadly some no longer here. I still write to 8, I think I still have 8 any way, this bloody Covid caused a lot of havoc with the postal systems in countries too.
Tiffany!! How on earth did you find the time to write all those letters?! (Not to mention the fortune in postage - eek!)
I was a housewife so plenty of time to reply. Postage wasn’t very expensive at first, I think I got my first pen pals in 1968. Actually two of those first pals I still write to, Sheila in SA & Bonni in America, though with Bonni we now chat on FB messenger. I have met both twice, they came to England on holidays, but not at the same time. Both have stayed here on seperate occasions.
Met with some pals who lived in England, but those died. Others I never met but we wrote to each other for years & some I phoned or they phoned me. This was long before we had the internet.
I even exchanged gifts with several before the mail got to expensive.
I had pen pals in Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, still got her, Australia, two in New Zealand, still write to them, England, still got 4 here, Ireland, both parts, America, had several there, but only one now & we tend to message & South Africa as already mentioned.
Forgot, it’s 9 current pals, forgot my pal in the Falkland Islands. Though both her & my SA pal haven’t written for a while now.
No, there was just too many miles between us.
