H5 Bird Flu Arrives in Australia

The outlook could be grim for Australia’s wildlife if a deadly strain of bird flu spreads to ducks

Species at risk include emblematic Australian animals such as the black swan, Australian sea lion and the Tasmanian devil.

How depressing. Whatever you get in Oz determines our vaccine contents in the coming flu season

I thought it was the other way round.

The flu season for each year starts in your part of the world, mainly because so many new strains will develop in China and surrounding countries and they may first manifest in places such as Oz because your winter creates a good environment for spread. The western pharma companies then rush to produce the vaccines based on what’s identified before our winter. The WHO will coordinate and publish the main strains.

Sorry but that makes no sense.

Why did Covid appear in Europe and kill 100s of thousands there long before it reached Australia? That originated in China.

Why has Bird Flu appeared on every continent except Australia? (until now)

I didn’t check if this is a new strain you posted Bruce but flu virus strains usually originate in China. Even Spanish flu. They hit you before they hit the northern hemisphere because of the seasons. If Australia reports the first case it will be labelled Australian. But the WHO almost always uses your part of the world as a base prediction because of China’s ability to generate new diseases.

Covid was a bit different as not affected by seasons

Ive just read that this strain of bird flu isn’t a danger to humans. Devastating to wild birds

I think you will find Spanish Flu is thought to have originated in the USA and was brought to Europe by their troops.

It was only called Spanish because that was the first country to report it because other countries had wartime censorship.

There are theories that it originated in China, it’s thought the virus subsequently mutated and Chinese had prior exposure so fewer deaths relative to population size.
