Gout. Anybody had it?

Anybody had gout? I think I may have it. Both big toes have been very painful for several days, no swelling, no redness but really painful and they throb when I go to bed at night.

Don’t suppose I will get in to see a GP any time soon but I remember my Mum had it once and her GP gave her some pills which she took for Just a few days.

I can only say my wife suffers with it in her feet and coupled with osteoarthritis, it does cause her problems.
You GP should be your 1st port of call and the initial triage phone call should give you a face-to-face fairly swiftly.
EDIT to add, it is a build up of crystals in affected joints and that’s about it.

Yes, I reckon that’s what I get in my big toes. Very painful for a couple of days, then it slowly subsides. I’ve never had it diagnosed but do use something called Ketoprofen 2.5% w/w Gel, prescribed by my GP for a very painful knee problem I also get (diagnosed as pseudo-gout after a motorcycle accident). That together with taking Paracetamol helps. Sometimes I wonder if it’s due to taking medication to keep my blood pressure down? It could be that it’s crystals being left in those joints where with higher blood pressure usually they would have been distributed in the blood or possibly not even form at all.
No doubt I will live though!

I was on a course I believe it was call allopurinol for three months as I had something in my blood test ,I think it was to much Uric acid, he prescribed me those as he said it would stop me getting gout.

I did not know gout was still a thing?

Uric acid is what can cause gout (not necessarily drinking too much port as often thought). I’ve been advised about uric acid being the cause of continuing problems with my knee. Nothing happens severely badly enough to warrant getting it sorted out though and I definitely don’t wish to take more tablets every day!

If you don’t mind me saying Baz, don’t you get a blood test every so often?..I do.

Yes, blood tests every year as previously I had a heart attack but either they don’t test for that or nothing has ever been noticed, which is what I assume. When I do get the painful toe joint, never both at the same time fortunately, it’s just a couple of days when it’s painful then all over and done with. I am not one for going to the GPs for everything, it is not as though I am not going to die from it.

@Baz46 , l’ve got it right now, l put it down to changing my
whisky brand to famouse grouse !!
Donkeyman! :-1::weary::weary::-1:

What can I say DM? Other than if you have then I hope it’s not too painful and you soon recover.
(At least before you empty the bottle anyway.) I cannot possibly blame mine on anything alcoholic
as I am teetotal and have been for about 60 years now!

I think you should probably try to see the doctor to make sure it is gout and not arthritis or connected to diabetes

They used to give you colchinine during a gout epidemic but it can have some nasty side effects and really upset your stomach I expect that’s what your mum took

Nowadays they tend to treat it with ibuprofen for the pain, steroids f you are very swollen and sometimes something to reduce the uric acid and stop it coming back You have to take that for the rest of your life

Ice packs and ibuprofen can be very soothing

A few years ago I had about six attacks in one year, in my toes and in my fingers, it was horrible, I thought I’d go crazy

Then one doctor thought it might be a side effect of my blood pressure tablets He took me off the Indapamide and gave me something else, andI haven’t had an attack since, touch wood. So if you are on any medication, it might be worth querying if they could be causing it

You need to chat with Old Grey Fox, Flowerpower, he had it bad rrecently too.
Perhaps he will see your thread.
Hope you can get it sorted soon.
