Good Morning - Sunday 26th Sept

Good morning - A grey day out there. There is a 50th Birthday in the family today, so cake later.

Our son’s new TV has turned into a saga. It is so wide that the feet won’t fit on the TV stand. Got to go there this morning to help put a new stand together and transfer the Sky and surround-sound boxes into it, then connect the TV and tune it in. I don’t want to do it.

Hey @mart , why not just screw a bigger top to the existing stand?

Wall mount?

I thought about that but the top would have to be better than MDF or standard thickness chipboard because of the overhang there would be at either end of the existing cabinet …and the weight of the TV. Neither he or I had anything that would do the job. It would have been me that had to go and get something for the purpose and make it work,

I get pretty over-committed catering for family needs at times, so a new stand delivered to his place seemed the easiest way.to go. I hope it turns out to be.

Morning all.

I’d bought a new Dunelm unit before ordering my new 50” tv. And I was the same, didn’t check if wide enough, but fortunately it is, just about. Maybe has about 6” spare either side, with the way the legs splay outwards. I couldn’t go wider with the unit as it has to fit into the bay, with a little spare room to the side.

Yesterday I pulled everything off and out, so I could get to the windows. Wanted to clean them, and the shutters. (Should really have taken down the nets for washing. Gah!). What a palaver then remembering which cable goes where. Attached to the tv I have the Sky box, a blu ray player and then yesterday I found the mains cable for the dvd/vhs combi unit and got that going. I have a two way HDMI adaptor but reckon I should get one with more slots. I was shattered afterwards and needed my shower.

Have to take a few things from the car today before it goes in for repairs in the morning. Hoping I can get fuel for topping up the courtesy.

That wouldn’t be a solution for where the TV needs to be.

Fair comment Mart, good luck with it anyway.

I wasn’t with our son when he bought the TV. I probably should have been. His lounge isn’t very big and I tried to tell him not to choose a bigger TV but he did anyway. Gone from 55" to 65". It’s going to be like sitting in a cinema.

Another dry day, have to put the daffs in, but with clay soil its difficult getting the conditions just right. Enjoy your day, beautiful and sunny here at the mo.

Good morning everyone :grinning: a misty start for the last of the warm days.

I am going to my son’s house this morning and maybe for a walk . I haven’t been up for ages and it will be lovely to see them all but no hugs :icon_sad: all the children have had back to school colds and I don’t want one of those.
I am hoping I have enough petrol for a couple of short trips this week. I am certainly not joining any long queues which started at 6am around here yesterday I am told.
Enjoy your day

Good morning all, a nice sunny start to the day today, but cloud is forecast later. Well like many others, I’ve been caught out on this crazy fuel panic buying situation, and have only about 85 miles left according to the car’s computer estimate. Hopefully I’ll be able to fill up sometime this week because I have regular commitments during the week which would make life difficult for others if I can’t drive!

Hope you get your son’s TV sorted @mart. Got to say I’m puzzled why TVs just keep getting bigger and bigger - why? Why do people all want these huge screens in their rooms? It just seems odd that while so many people live in ever smaller houses, TVs - and furniture - are getting ever larger :102:

No plans for today, but probably stay close to home as I don’t want to use my precious fuel . Have a good day everyone

It’s the W…y Waving syndrome, BS!

Lads, always have to have the biggest & best.

That’s why all the dealers love us!

I’m planning an electric device to lift my TV up and out of the way, when not in use.

It will be based on the Electric Garage Door principal.

I’ll just press a button and up it goes.

Good morning all :grinning: a warm sunny start to the day…

Washing is out drying on the line, doubt there will be many more nice drying days.

Hoping to do as much as I can in the garden today before the weather changes.

Enjoy your day folks :grinning:

Got to say I do think 55inches is a good size for a TV, don’t think I would want anything bigger but they are without a doubt a bit of a faff. Mine is wall mounted which is good as it is out of the way and not taking space on the furniture. But it is a nuisance getting to all the ports to plug stuff in and I would love to change the soundbar as the current Samsung does not do dialogue very well at low volumes but getting the TV off the wall is a two man job.

Hi

I have a Sharp 55 inch Android in my lounge, the 3d LC has gone into my upstairs bedroom.

55 inch is plenty for me and I am totally happy.

I am elderly now, 4k is a waste due to my eyesight.

I am happy with my set up.

Bit damp but mild down in my part of the country . Promises for a bit of sun later. Let’s hope so it’s sheet washing day .

Slightly damp here too and as for laundry, the sun came out yesterday just as my machine finished its last spin with the whites, so out on the lines it all went👍

Picture quality can actually get worse with a larger screen. Standard digital TV definition transmissions need a lot of upscaling to fill a 4K screen. Upscaling means the TV processor has to fill in video definition that isn’t being transmitted. It has to work out add add what it thinks should be there. If it’s a big 4K screen the more the available definition has to be stretched out, Hence a picture that might not be as good as it is on a smaller screen.

We got the stand sorted out and the conclusion is that it would have been easier to use a plank of wood. Done now though and the TV has a fairly good picture from a Sky box. The finer points of fixing leads and tidying up can wait for another day or two.

Best move I made albeit expensive was going OLED. Lovely picture even though there are far to many settings to tweak. I am still finding tweaks 2 years later.

I went for QLED now that Samsung has introduced mini LED backlighting and therefore better local dimming. It is a generally great picture (49")
