It is a superb album. I need to explore more of their albums when I around to it
Yes it is.
I had been unaware of the BeeGees Spicks and Specks before coming to OZ.They have a TV music quiz here with that name and use the song as their theme tune.
This is a clip from the show which is guaranteed to raise a smile.
It features Barry Morgan from the World of Organs.
Hmmm…Dunno what I think to that, PS. Looks a bit like our own Alan Partridge (aka Steve Coogan). Similar sort of thing?
Obviously has zero connection to the Bee Gees:confused:
Just a few to mention briefly again to keep the ball rolling…
No.694: "Inside Job " by Don Henley (2000)
Eagles drummer, vocalist, songwriter and mainman Henley and his fourth solo release from the early millennium. A rather mixed bag with little direction, but cool and classy in all the right places regardless.
No.693: “Waking Hours” by Del Amitri (1989)
Scots band led by Justin Currie who are still going, on and off with their rather unsung credibility, as they do have a lot going for them. Except a decent image. Best song they ever did: Nothing Ever Happens:
No.692: “Nighthawks At The Diner” by Tom Waits (1975)
Third album in my list from Mr. Waits, a superbly dour and distressed songwriter. Had little or no response from his other releases in this thread, so just a brief mention this time.
No.691: “Farewell To The World- Live At Sydney '06” by Crowded House (2006)
The ever-dependable Crowded House, New Zealand’s finest with their swansong release before they went their separate ways. One of the world’s great bands, you will see them again in here before the end of this rundown.
No.690: “Doll By Doll” by Doll By Doll (1981)
So why more or less dismiss Don Henley or Tom Waits above for a lesser relatively unknown artist like Doll By Doll you may ask? Well just because the first single from it would probably feature in my all-time top 10 tracks that’s why. The late Jackie Leven and his Scots combo on their third release brought forth this seminal folk-rock ballad and I still have a place for this single deep in my soul after all these years. It’s an immensely powerful, stirring ballad of great wonder…forgive the self-indulgence please on this one but I just LOVE this song…
No.689: “Sumday” by Grandaddy (2003)
Jason Lyttle and his merry men of undoubtably anglophile-strewn humour brought us a series of weird and very wacky albums in their 15-year history. I’d put them in the same bracket as Flaming Lips, They Might Be Giants or Crash Test Dummies as having that oddball slant to their records.
No.688: “A Single Man” by Elton John (1978)
I’ve always had a soft spot for dear old Fat Reg. very public, very in-the-news with his hissy fits and sensational stories but you can’t he’s not honest about his life. he’s a genuine guy and a great songwriter and performer whatever else he may have been.
1978’s A Single Man may be an odd choice for inclusion amongst his notable classic albums, but apart from the of-the-time hit ‘Part-Time Love’ it also includes one of the best (near) instrumentals ever recorded - Song For Guy:
No.687: “The Song Of Crazy Horse” by J.D. Blackfoot (1973)
I’m going to leave you all(?) with this little treat tonight. And it’s an unsung corker of an album, notable really for the side-long tale of the legend of the outlaw Crazy Horse. If you’ve never heard this 19-minute western-style monologue-like tale, you are in for a revelation. This is awesome, folks. See you tomorrow.
Great to see Crowded House in your favourites list.
There’s been a bit of a battle over where they’re from - NZ or Australia.
I’m a Kiwi, and would love to say they’re from NZ, but they were formed in Melbourne. And two of the three founding members were Aussies.
So I allow the Aussies this one.
But we invented the pavlova!
Hi Lovemyboys, great to see you in here I dunno if you are just passing on the off chance or you’ve been viewing a while but it’s good to see another female in my thread for a change. Surely, there is music for ladies too I wonder?
Anyway, on this particular topic, I’m not sure. Legend has it that Crowded House are recognised as a band from New Zealand although other sources say they have members originating in Australia. Even a quick glance at Wikipedia just now is pretty sketchy and muddled on this.
What I do know though is that Tim and Neil Finn were member of the band Split Enz first, and this band kick started their career in the late 70’s.
Please keep popping in if you can, LMB
I’m a big music lover, always have music playing, and make a visit here at least every other day.
As for Crowded House, Neil Finn himself said it’s an Australian band.
Split Enz was definitely a Kiwi band.
They changed their name from Split Ends to Split Enz when they moved to Oz in the mid 70s to signify their NZ roots.
I was in Oz when they were there, but never got to see them.
Thanks for the link.
Odd though that Neil Finn says they were an Aussie band band but Split Enz were not even though he was in both bands.
Maybe because he was living in Australia when Crowded House formed? I don’t know for sure, but that’s the only thing that makes sense!
You’re right actually, LMB.
I’ve just looked this up in my bible - The Great Rock Discography - and although Neil Finn was born in New Zealand in 1958, Crowded House were formed in Australia in 1985 making them essentially an Aussie band.
Very interesting and it’s great to know this thread is educating us with some music trivia. I love pop quizzes!
There’s always been rivalry, mostly friendly and fun, between Australia and NZ.
So for me to admit Crowded House was not a NZ band is huge!
Well there you go. Can’t argue with the facts I guess!
You enjoying the thread, LMB? Have any of your personal favourites appeared here yet and Is there anything you think I should change or improve? Always good to hear feedback.
I’m definitely enjoying it, and there’s been quite a few of my favourites, with more to come I’m sure!
As far as I’m concerned, no change or improvement is required.
They’re your favourites!
Thank goodness for YT though eh!
Neil Finn is so good that I can’t blame anyone for trying to claim him.
Finn and Vedder, “Throw Your Arms Around Me”
Thanks
Yes it’s all personal choice at the end of the day, but I’m pleased that others are finding some of theirs included too.
Nice to see that video. Thanks, Surfermom for posting
