Males are at least 6 - 7 years of age before they are big enough and strong enough to take on the reigning dominant male for breeding rights.
Breeding rights longevity is determined by how long the dominant male remains strong enough to fend off challengers from up and coming younger males.
Alpha male status usually lasts at least 12 months.
