Does this mean you will need to buy another car?
Why do you need to apply for it, Bob? Are there tests or something? Why can it even be worrying and stressful?
I’m asking because I need to renew mine in one or two years, too but that’s no big thing. It’s the same as walking to the Post Office and buy ten stamps. ![]()

over 70 years old the licence renewal is every 3 years. In my case as I have glaucoma so I also have to take an eye sight test. So the DVLA send out an application form one fills in which asks about any disabilities etc that might affect ones driving capabilities.
The eye siight test is being able to read a number plate at 20 mtrs and another for each side when looking straight ahead (field test). failure with either and no licence.

We can manage with one car as we are both pensioners . The real reason I wanted a new driving licence because there are times when proof of identity is asked for with an official form of using a passport or driving licence. Such as with banking etc
I’ve always thought you should be on license rs…

How many can say that after over 60 years of driving they don’t have any penalties or disqualifications. I can
but I am on licence, marriage licence for the last 54years
Thanks, RS. Those tests have been continually suggested but to no avail so far. It may just be a question of time, though…Can understand your relief. Wishing you a safe ride.
what bugs us older “pensioner” drivers is that young inexperienced drivers. How they race around our narrow roads -crash kill pedestrians etc and are not forced (or usually disqualified) and made to retake a driving test either written or actual driving.
Quite an achievement.
I can say that for 43 years.
Over 70 years for me but I only drive locally now.
who remembers this
first book was in 1962 which I can’t find at the moment
so this is the second one I got that used stick in pages
I remember my dad having license like that.
My first licence was like that too then I got a long green sheet of paper which lasted until I was 70, In Australia my licence has always been like a credit card with my photo on it.
I have never had a parking fine, speeding ticket or any penalty after over sixty two years of driving.
I have to have a medical and optician’s cert every year to keep my licence, the doctor and opticians send it to Service NSW each year every May
One of the “move to France” achievements is to swop my UK licence for a French one. Luckily when I did it France had moved to a centralised system, rather than department by department, and got the process on line. Anyone doing it earlier had a full dossier of files to submit in triplicate. Now my licence is French it means I no longer have the palaver of getting a reference code from DVLA when hiring a car in the UK. It’s the little things that make a difference.
Now all we need is the French authorities to allow full time residents with a residency card to use the EU line at passport control, rather having to join the long, long slow queue for dodgy non-EU people.
Actually I won’t need to apply for it Dachs, they will send me all the stuff I will need to do to get another licence.
Not worrying or stressful for me, I don’t generally do either Dachs… ![]()
However, having suffered three heart attacks and now fitted with a pacemaker/defibrillator there might be some awkward questions regarding my fitness to drive.
I’ll take what comes…

I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks Dachs…

It was bound to happen, so why did Christopher Biggens not do the same?
The power to take away your livelihood, or indeed you right to drive, should not be in the hands of a retail optician.
It has long been the my opinion that most of the opticians I’ve visited want to sell me a pair of glasses or two, they probably get a commision for doing so…Not a good situation when your life depends on the outcome of an eye test. DVLA opticians should not belong to a company that survives on the sale of a product. If an MOT garage is found to be fraudulent in the distribution of certificates they will be refused a licence to test vehicles in the future.
Same should apply to opticians and the company they work for.
My photo ID driving licence card came today. So ok for the next three years
Well done realspeed…
