What beautiful markings … she looks a bright little thing.
The expression says it all … Look, if I’m going to stand around getting soaked …it’s going to cost you.
They do make lovely companions though … I like cats but prefer dogs. Cats are too independent and don’t fuss their human friends as much.
My partner and I have had six rescued animals over the past 25 years. Five dogs and one cat. This is our first year without a pet. They have shared the story of our lives. The first rescue dog we got was this boy called Denver, and as you can see from the cuddle he’s giving me in the picture, he was very affectionate.
The rescue centre said he was ‘about five’ but our vet said he was around ten years old when he joined our family. He had a very traumatic past, having been used as a bait dog. He suffered from nightmares where he would wake up howling and hid food under carpets, because he had been starving when he was found straying. He was also covered in scars.
It was a truly beautiful experience to show him love and a happy life. He had his goofy moments. The first time we took him for a walk, he was wearing a coat and he went charging off skipping and jumping until it was up over his head!
He went on holiday with us, ran on the beach and even stayed in a hotel with us. He had a cat to snuggle with and later another dog. They all got along really well.
He was a quiet, gentle and dignified soul. He lived with us for four special years. I remember him with great love.
I once read an account by a doctor of a patient who had ‘died’ for a short time on the operating table. He was resuscitated and as he opened his eyes he said something amazing to the doctor. ‘All the dogs of my life came running to greet me.’
I believe they are all waiting patiently. And what a moment that will be.

My dogs are and always have been the absolute joy of my life . They have always been such great friends to me . They have been through good times and bad with me and never have let me down . For most of my life I had four , mainly whippets but I currently only have two poodles . I wouldn’t ever want to be without dogs .
I love dogs. We had one for many years but never got another when she died. I would like another one but it would undoubtedly live longer than I will, so maybe it wouldn’t be fair to get one. Also, I’d worry about it getting ill with the price of vets bills these days. Great creatures though and I always enjoy making a fuss of other people’s dogs.
Our dog is amazing, we lost her about six years ago (or more) to a main line railway track with no way off, she returned 36 hours later, we did all the grief in the interim, then in August 2024, she had a none treatable cancerous growth on her leg, the Vet said take her home and spoil her, we are still following those instructions, she is the comeback kid, whatever happens from here on in, us and her have been very lucky, that may soften the blow when the inevitable happens.

Can a dog really make life better ?
My dear little Jake did …such and lovely little fella.
Lost him a year ago, I’ve not been able to part with his ashes , tearing up just thinking about him.
Dogs REALLY DO make life much better. I love this thread. I loved reading how you all loved your dogs and the special relationship you had with your pets. I’ve been with my husband for 36 years now and we’ve had 6 dogs and 2 rabbits in that time. In that 36 years we’ve had 2 shepherds, 2 schnoodles, a Yorkshire terrier and a miniature schnauzer. We currently have a 13 year old schnoodle and 3 year old miniature schnauzer who we adore. Loosing these family members is so difficult. One thing we don’t do is be without a dog. We always have two dogs. When one dies we usually have another one within 2 weeks.
Jake was beautiful and such soulful eyes. What breed was he?
Hi Annie

I also lost a Jacob recently. He was almost 15 when he crossed Rainbow Bridge. I miss the little fella so…
How can people pick one dog above any other on the adorable stakes?
Its the same with Birds and Geezers ![]()
There is not one dog I’ve met I haven’t liked, can’t say that about people.
