Can you eat that one raw? I suppose you could really…I adore raw mushrooms. Ooh imagine you treated it like bread, and put things in the middle of it like a sarnie. I could make a packed lunch with that, what a cool idea!
my way …
don’t wash, don’t peel, flash fry, a shot of brandy to burn off juices, a glug of creme fraiche, serve.
Wild edible puffball …
Ooh dOOd, that would be a bit posh to go in me bacon sarnie though.
… could get messy.
Oh good Lord, I’ve never seen anything like that! Just imagine, a slice of mushroom served with a chicken sauce. Sounds completely the wrong way round
I like foraging also - never come across one that size though!
I like your approach to cooking, d00d!:-D:-D
Shaggy Ink Caps are one of my favourites but they do need to be used soon after gathering as, otherwise, they auto-digest themselves and you are left with a black sticky mess!
But they do taste simply divine with a bacon omelette.
Another thing to know about them - do not drink any alcohol for about 24 hours after eating them - it can cause a disastrous reaction!
Not to be confused with the Common Ink Cap - which is poisonous.
This one, the oyster mushroom, we came across fairly often on woodland walks:

Apparently, simply pan-fried … but they never appealed to me (or his wife … !) … :009:
I usually wash mushrooms but not always, however I do know that the person meant by washing them changes the texture but once dry they soon recover.
.Personally I never pick mushrooms because I am not confident I can tell edible mushrooms from deadly ones. For example Death Cap mushrooms look pretty ordinary and look very similar to some edible varieties yet if you survive them then a kidney transplant in the minimum you will need.

it is a pity really because Magic Mushrooms are really interesting.
They are very tasty, Omah. Give them a try!
My mum always peeled mushrooms it was a job I was often given to do. These days I was told that mushrooms we buy from supermarkets are grown in a pasteurised soil so there is no need to peel or wash just wipe with kitchen roll to remove any debris off them.
I just peel them.
Thank you for your answers everyone.
It seems some people wash them, some don’t.
Some peel, some don’t.
Ah well, we’re all still here to tell the tale, so I guess it can’t matter that much either way.
I never wash mushrooms, just wipe them with a paper towel.
I only buy them from the supermarket so they don’t need washing.
Life is too short to peel a mushroom! I think I’d find it difficult too.
