They finally hit the spot with this album.
Quite liked some of Talk Talks work, but they gradually lost the plot.
Mmm, I wonder when Devo first got into music in a big way…
I have been been looking for this album for years…
I’ll find it one day, at a price I can politically afford.
Another great song title…
This song has some hilarious lyrics. Apparently a birthday tribute to Grace Slick’s then boyfriend.
Same era, epic song…
Just lovely…
And to finish…
With some related songs to follow.
I regularly listen to both Mr Fox albums although the first is my favourite. The Hanged Man is especially atmospheric. I realise it is set in Yorkshire, the whole album is, but it always puts me in mind of the very old, now redundant but preserved, church in Parracombe in Devon.
Good albums. I bought the double re-issue (think it was around '73) It was pretty scary stuff compared to Steeleye who were singing about elves in woods and jolly sailors. You’re right about the atmosphere, both albums are are dripping with it, a rare thing indeed.
Connections. Loosely. Nantucket and IABD made me think of this. Only Linda Thompson comes a close second to this voice, IMO.
and a bit of sisterly love.
Directions. Musically one thing leads onto another. Don’t hear much (if any) reggae these days. Black Uhuru were one of my favourites. Wonderful vocal blend and the ultimate rhythm section.
Nantucket Sleighride - whaling, so…
Music’s very own idiot savant,
Mrs Devo’s least favourite song because whenever she hears it it becomes her earworm for the next week,
Penguin Eggs should be in every record collection!
I am still missing Lou Reed.
And finally, a thing of beauty,
Sure I heard that Judy Collins has returned with a new album. Anyway at this rate we may be in danger of getting more contributions to this thread, so better get down to something serious. Taken from the original wax cylinders as collected by Cyril Ship.
Words and Music. My favourite Planxty album (the black album comes a very close second). A magical album from start to finish, my two favourite tracks though are the sublime
and
I like them all but especially Cold Blow and the Rainy Night which has some really strange time signatures on it and astonishing pipe playing.
What do you get when you have five virtuosi playing together?Yes.
Lauren Laverne uses the intro to this as a bed on her radio programme but never, as far as I am aware, has played the whole thing. Shame, one of my favourites.
And my absolute favourite,
Jon Anderson’s timing just before 5 minutes never fails to make me catch my breath,
Hum! I did quite a bit of (art) work for a certain drummer. First time he rang up he said “Do you know who I am?” I thought it quite silly that he made a phone call because he wasn’t sure who he was. Subsequent calls and e-mails were like being grilled by the headmaster.
One of the nicest people I put together artwork for was this bloke.
