I read today that the R number was back up to January levels…that’s scary…

Blimey, you’re right:

The weekly R number in England is estimated to have risen to between 1.1 and 1.3 - with the number of COVID infections in the country now at its highest level since January.

The reproduction figure, from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), means that for every 10 people with coronavirus they will, on average, infect between 11 and 13 others.

The pandemic therefore appears to be growing in England, as last week ‘R’ was estimated to be between 1.0 and 1.2.

Aye well…At least you down there don’t have an immanent mass gathering happening over the next week or so. I daresay Scotland will surpass you after Cop26

I can’t find the latest R Number for Scotland, but:

The reproduction rate R in Scotland, as of 12 October, is estimated as being between 0.8 and 1.0.

Back to very high …

Prof Jonathan Van-Tam told the BBC it was a concern that Covid levels were “running this hot, this early in the autumn season”.

He said too many people believed the pandemic was now over.

Christmas and the winter months are “potentially going to be problematic”, Prof Van-Tam warned.

In a question and answer session with BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 5 Live, Prof Van-Tam said that while cases appeared to have stabilised, they were very high, and above most of Europe.

He also said deaths were rising and there were signs infections were starting to “penetrate” older age groups.

The current levels of coronavirus meant caution was now needed, he said, adding that experts would be continuing to analyse the data over the next days and weeks.

How Christmas is affected would depend on a “whole range of behaviours”, he said.

Face coverings and the caution people took in interacting with others, along with the speed of vaccinations, would be “a big determinant between what happens now and the darkest months of the winter”.

It ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings and there ain’t no fat lady waitin’ in the wings … :090:

Is the infected number/total only of people who have been tested positive, or does it also include people, who are in isolation after contact from track and trace ?

The daily and weekly figures are solely the number of people tested positive and reported - no figures for contact/isolation are included.

I know no figures are shown for people in isolation, but I just wonder if they get added in to the total from phone in’s, and Track and trace.

I’ve asked a few people involved PHW and to be truthful they’re not sure
