Charity urges Matt Hancock to do more to raise dyslexia awareness

A charity has called on Matt Hancock to renew his efforts to raise awareness about dyslexia after apparently only fleetingly addressing the issue on I’m a Celebrity.

The former health secretary defended his decision to take a break from Westminster and sign up for the ITV reality show in the Australian jungle by claiming he wanted to use it as a platform to raise the profile of his dyslexia campaign.

In the end it was mentioned three or four times, according to Kate Griggs, the founder and CEO of Made By Dyslexia, who said it was “a shame” there was not more about dyslexia in the show.

“For us, yes, it would have been fantastic if there had been a really big focus on dyslexia,” said Griggs. “What matters most is what he does now he is out of the jungle.”

Viewers claimed it was not until two weeks into the show that Hancock finally raised the issue of dyslexia, when he discussed being diagnosed at university while in conversation with the comedians Seann Walsh and Babatunde Aléshé.

On Friday (1), there will be a second reading of the dyslexia screening and teacher training bill, a private member’s bill tabled by Hancock to provide universal screening for dyslexia in primary schools and improve teacher training on the issue.

Griggs said: “This bill is way, way overdue. It’s crazy we are not screening every child. It’s quite frankly a disgrace every teacher is not given the skills they need to help and empower these children. Now Matt is not tied to a party, I hope he is really, really able to champion the cause and put things right for dyslexic children. Let’s see what Matt does now (2).”

(1) Today in Parliament.

(2) Quite …

Mmm, did anyone actually believe Hancock when he said he was going to the jungle to promote dyslexia awareness?

He just threw it out there as a feeble justification and when it didn’t work, he had no interest any more and did nothing for them

As was to be expected from the self interested little twerp but disappointing for the charities

West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock reads dyslexia bill in Commons

The MP made his first appearance in the chamber since he was suspended from the Conservative parliamentary party for his controversial decision to appear on the ITV programme.

He said his Dyslexia Screening and Teacher Training Bill aims to “spread opportunity and reduce inequality in society by providing every person with a world-class education” and pointed to the “gaping hole in the Government’s literacy drive”, quoting statistics which show that just one in five dyslexic children are diagnosed while in school.

Mr Hancock said he was shocked to discover that these figures hadn’t changed in over a decade adding: "Without early identification, we will never reach full literacy.

“So the next stage of the education revolution under this administration must be to improve opportunities that dyslexic children and children with other neurodivergent conditions have.”

As the sitting ran out of time to finish the debate, the Bill will need to return to the Commons at a later date for it to be able to pass its second reading.

Well, he’s shown his face in the House - next, his “Pandemic Diaries” get serialised in the daily Mail (probably for lots of money); they are likely to be contentious - Hancock insists that only a fraction of the Covid cases in care homes – as few as 1.2 per cent – were actually caused by hospital discharges.

Hancock was greedy in camp and he’s still greedy:

Apologies: No detail because I don’t have an account - hopefully, an accessible source will pick this up and publish extracts.

He believes his own bullshyte,as most MPs do.
Shame he didn`t believe in keeping to his marriage vows too.
