Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is the first MP to grill Boris Johnson over Sue Gray’s initial findings.
He thanks Gray for her professionalism and says it’s not her fault for not delivering her full report.
“We now know that 12 cases have reached the threshold for a criminal investigation,” he says.
“The prime minister has taken us all for fools.”
Johnson attacks the opposition leader’s record as the director of public prosecutions and says he is pre-judging the police investigation.
“I have complete confidence in the police and hope they will be allowed to get on with the job,” he adds.
Aye, there’s the rub … is “the job” an investigation or a whitewash …
Johnson is asked twice whether he will commit to publishing Sue Gray’s full and unredacted report after the Met investigation concludes - once by Labour’s Diane Abbott and once by his own MP, Mark Harper.
But the PM does not make the commitment.
Instead, he says we have to wait for the police to conclude their inquires, as it is the “proper thing to do”.
And at that stage, he will “take a decision” on publication.
NB Johnson has, previously and repeatedly, pledged to publish the report in full.
See , his lips moved, now you know when the truth escapes him.
Was there a party in PM’s flat on 13 November?
Labour MP Carl Turner points out that one of the alleged parties being investigated by the police is one on 13 November 2020 in the prime minister’s flat.
He says the prime minister denied any such party had taken place when speaking in the Commons on 8 December last year.
He asks if Johnson will correct the record - but the PM stands by what he said and urges MPs to wait for the outcome of the police inquiry.
BJ’s banking on Dick …
ETA
Some MPs are questioning if that meant he misled parliament, which would be a serious offence (and if done deliberately, something he’d be expected to resign for).
Boris Johnson though has said he stands by what he said then and says everyone needs to wait for the outcome of the police investigation
I can only say after watching as much of The Commons as I could stomach. That on the basic level, all politics aside. Boris Johnson is not the kind of “man” I would associate with on a personal level.
Hi
Boris is getting more nasty remarks from his own side than expected, he is being hammered by some senior Tories.
Hi
Update, Sue Gray has sent 300 photos and 500 pages of documents to the Met.
Even if the Met decides not to take action, Boris could still publish them then.
“I get it, and I will fix it!”
But will he?
Hi
He does not Get It, if he did it would never have happened in the first place.
Of course not - that would mean crossing Carrie … and he’s not likely to do that …
Very true …
I have a question about today’s meeting. Who was the Boris Johnson mini me sitting behind him?
Boris’ only effective opposition now is his own back benchers.
Hi
Boris’s main opposition is the British Public.
I am the only one who was unfamiliar with the word redacted before this fiasco ?
There is a rumour going around that Boris wasn’t present at the parties inside number 10 (the ones he was present in were according to the rules if you read the Gray report and the dates at the back of it - from July to 16 Dec we were out of lockdown and no facemask mandate etc). The rumour is that (for the illegal parties), because Number 10 is so vast there is no way of knowing if there is a party going on or not - you would never hear it from the other end of Number 10 and they were behind closed doors anyway. Apparently a number of junior civil servants had parties on several of occasions, supported by senior leadership in the civil service, but, on all occasions, Boris was either Boris was oblivious to them as he either wasn’t in Number 10 at all or in meetings in another part of it (or Number 11 as they are all connected by tunnels).
The Sue Gray report was going to blow the lid on the whole thing and by doing so, drag the met police into it because even though the police in Number 10 and in Downing Street knew what was going on they didn’t stop the parties even though they knew damned well it was illegal - likewise the suitcase full of booze that was carried in there.
So, the Met Police tell Sue Gray that she cannot publish her report because it would “prejudice” the police case (weird right ?) because they were investigating (getting themselves off the hook more likely and protecting the civil service). Instead, Sue Gray stuck two fingers up at Dick of the Yard and published what she could anyway, carefully wording the report “leaders” instead of “Prime Minister” or “Cabinet Minister” - the reason being that “leaders” refers to the “Leaders” of the civil service, not the government.
So, now Dick of the Yard is kicking this down the road (not the government) because the outrage from the public will turn away from Boris and onto the Met and the civil service. In the meantime the government have a golden opportunity to get more control over the cicvil service (which they are doing) or they will blow the lid off the whole thing.
So… it may not as we think. That’s the rumour anyway, we will know for sure in time but in the meantime keep en eye out for senior civil service leaders resigning - because if they don’t and this gets out, they will be fired and lose pensions and other benefits.
Like I said -thats the rumour.
