Anyone had a steroid injection?

I’m due to have a steroid injection in my hip next week after which I’ve been told I will need to stay in the day ward for at least three hours… Anyone had one of those? How does it feel afterwards - can I walk (without pain), drive?
At the moment, I’m planning to do some shopping afterwards, then drive home. Am I being too optimistic?

I don’t know. But it sounds like you shouldn’t get too ambitious. Good luck.

@Loftytofty It could be possible to self-drive home, but I would not recommend that experience due to the proceedure and I doubt if anyone will give you written permission, whch you will need if stopped by plod. Recovery is not instant, but withing that same week, I was moving around reasonably freely and almost pain free, but it does vary from person to person. Two years further down the track and appart from the odd twinge, I’m back to how I used to be. It does work better with some people that others and I reckon I was one of the lucky ones👍

Mrs mart has had them into her lower spine. Sometimes these need sedation beforehand. This can take some hours to wear off. Best not to drive. The injections don’t seem to do much good at first. Perhaps even a little more painful for the first few days. Then the benefit sets in and they do the job of reducing pain.

No experience myself however I collected my BIL from the hospital after havng a steriod injection in his hip a couple of years ago, there was no way he could have driven he was simply “smiling” all the way home. By the evening apparently he was fine, the benefits were gradual over the week (as far as I recall), and lasted until his hip replacement 18 months later, he often says he could not have coped that long without the injection.

I would ring the ward and check.

Hope you get the same benfit as my BIL. Good luck

Yes Worry not. Had one to pelvic platform. Extremely effective. Acute Pain totally relieved within a couple of hours.
Procedure to have another in 3 months.

Hi Loftytofy, good luck with your hip injection next week.

I have had multiple hip injections over the timeframe of
four years. So about one to two yearly, depends on the
discretion of my doctor. My first three injections gave me
significant relief. The last three have not. I’ll not be having
anymore.

To answer your question about how does it feel afterwards.
I had the Fluroscopic Guided joint Hip Injection. I felt just a pinch
upon the needle going in to my groin area. I call it the groin area
at least. Took about 30 min for my procedure, nurse assistant
prepping the room for the procedure and etc, charting some notes
and all that. I had an excellent procedure doctor who explained all
things very well to me and all through the procedure.

I got dressed in the gown room, went at it slowly, I felt stiff in the
area but the pain was decreasing within the hour in my hip and
moreover the upcoming seven days, I got even further relief.
With me, I felt just a little nausea for a couple, days and a bit
of facial flushing from the Corticosteroid medication into the
hip, but that is not uncommon. Anyway, my injections lasted
just about three months and not longer. Things depend on the
person, the cause of pain, and other factors.

I always could walk after my hip injections, went to do grocery
shopping and whatever else was needed that day. No hot baths,
no strenuous exercise, and just take it a little easy. I was able to
drive, no issues whatsoever with driving.

You are not being too Optimistic imo. Just go in with a positive
attitude, and hope for the best.

It seems each person has their own experience with these injections,
not the same for everyone.

I would cancel the shopping. I had one for frozen shoulder a few years ago. Overdid it that night putting together a flat pack of shelves. Then later didn’t feel too great. It’s best to take a taxi home and rest until the next day.
