So true! In fact, I’d have thought it would help both the farmers and the shop if we were pouring it away, because then we’d be buying more, wouldn’t we?
The food standards agency or Defra, or somebody has got to stop this immediately. What about Covid sufferers taking the lids off or drippy noses sniffing it . . . aargh, dont bear thinking about.
I think they are taking off the “use by” date but it will still have a “best before” date so you’ll know how old it is without sniffing it in the shop!
The reason is that a lot of people throw out stuff that’s gone past it’s “use by” date without checking to see if it’s still edible, including milk.
So if the milks gone past the “best before” date they want to encourage us to check if it’s still OK by sniffing it ( at home!) rather than automatically chucking it.
I can see an opportunity here as a professional milk sniffer👃
thanks for the first chuckle of the day Primy
This isn’t how I first imagined it from what you said Pixie.
It seems it is the ‘Use By’ date they are removing, and putting ‘Best Before’ instead.
There is more flexibility in Best Before and doesn’t tie shoppers to an exact date.
I thought it pretty weird if we were supposed to sniff in the shops, but that isn’t the case at all, according to the news today. We are supposed to check the milk at home before we pour it away.
Having said this, I still can’t see how it helps the dairy farmers whether we keep it or pour it away, as they still get paid either way!
Ahh, I see Mups, well it was just coming out when I read about it yesterday, so I could have misunderstood it!
I think it is meant to help the farmers by lessening the demand for milk (indirectly). If we keep milk for longer, we don’t buy as much, therefore the supermarkets won’t need as much from the farmers, and they in turn don’t have to pressure their animals into producing as much. That’s how i see it - but I barely drink it anyway. I just hope they (supermarkets) don’t follow suit with other items…I quite like having the use by/best before dates on things.
I think my. Best before. Date expired about twenty years ago…
We already do that though don’t we. I never throw milk away before doing the sniff test…at home lol. I was thinking they meant sniffing it in the supermarket, I’m like eurgh
Thank goodness for Milkmen, Glass bottles, and a good doorstep delivery service!
So if you get some milk that is a bit iffy, do you take it back to the supermarket to. shelf isolate
